The Gospel of Mark begins with the Lord as an adult and goes straight into His ministry. It is very much a doing Gospel and in the Greek it moves very quickly. As the Text that follows on from Matthew, its stories depict the putting into practise the truths of the Word that Matthew has introduced us to. And so in this sense, the Gospel of Mark calls on us to compel ourselves to make the effort to work. To take up the tools that the Lord as the Word has offered us and to use them to examine the quality our inner, mental life.

The Lord’s Prayer

To take the Lord’s Prayer as something to be recited repetitively reduces it to the very practice of vain repetitions that the Lord warns against. This prayer is the archetypal prayer, it contains everything a person can ask of the Lord because it contains everything that the Lord is able to give to us and as such is a blueprint for living a genuine spiritual life. It offers us both an instruction and direction in what we must engage with in terms of our spiritual work. So for this intercommunication to occur we have to learn how to live the prayer because it is only in living it that we can become receivers of its benefits. Saying the prayer will effect nothing if it is not lived and it is the prayer understood as something to be lived and what it asks of us, which will guide us in our examination of it over this 8-part series.

The New Jerusalem

And I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and the sea no longer is. And I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of Heaven from God, having been prepared as a bride, having been adorned for her Husband And I heard a great voice out of Heaven, saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God with men! (Revelation 21:1-3)

The descending of the holy city, New Jerusalem is a symbol of what living the spiritual life produces within a person. The doctrines for Spiritual Christianity offer us new ways to think about the nature of God and the Word, of the self, of life after death and of heaven and hell. The ideas they contain are designed to build a new rational faculty within us from which we can see what is spiritual but this can only happen when the truths that they offer are practiced and made the basis for how we live and examine our inner life. In this way, they are the means by which what is heavenly can descend into, and become more grounded in the reality of our lives. Becoming a living doctrine, from and for our life … prepared as a bride adorned for her Husband.

The perspective that Spiritual Christianity offers is that the Word is Divine revelation which unfolds the operation of the Lord as the Word within the human mind. John’s Gospel is well suited to this as its style lends itself to lifting our thought above the merely historical framework of the Gospel story which supports a literal reading of letter – into the living, dynamic, operation of the Word or Logos as the Divine power that recreates our mind into a heavenly form. If we open our hearts to what the Lord has to say to us from His Word then our journey through this Gospel will be a journey of transformation as we come to see reflected in its text our relationship to the Lord as the Word, and so find there what it is we must do if we are to grow and progress in the things of the spirit and be delivered from the hell that is our native sense of self.
